How Kenya's .ke namespace is organised

Kenya's domains are split into zones by purpose. Each one tells visitors what kind of organisation you are, and some ask for proof before you can register. Here's the whole map, with KES prices.

How a domain name is built

Every .ke zone, with its rules

Kenya's local namespace includes direct .ke registration and purpose-based third-level categories. Government, higher-education and school namespaces require supporting documents.

Three families of domain endings

.ke country domains

Run by KeNIC. They tell visitors you serve Kenya, and some zones inside .ke ask for proof of eligibility.

Generic domains

Endings such as .com, .org and .shop describe what you do rather than where you are. Most are open to anyone.

Location domains

.africa ties your brand to the continent. Use it alongside .co.ke if you work across borders.

.ke zone questions

Is .co.ke a top-level domain?

.ke is Kenya's top-level domain. .co.ke is a zone inside it, managed under KeNIC policy.

What does “Eligibility rules” mean?

The registry expects the zone to be used for a stated purpose, such as organisations or schools, and may ask for supporting documents.

What does “Restricted” mean?

Only specific bodies, such as government or military entities, can register these zones, and they need the registry's approval.

Can a foreign company register here?

It depends on the zone and KeNIC policy. Open zones are usually the easiest. Ask us before ordering and we'll confirm.

Does a local domain help search visibility?

Search engines treat country-code domains as a signal that a site targets Kenya, which can help local results. Content and links still matter more.
